Knowledge was once our most powerful assets; now with the benefit of the internet we can Google anything we want to know at any time and place to gain the answers. Before that, televisions and radios were invented in the twentieth century and power over the masses became more effective as people turned to them and away from books. Before books, power came from the noble lords and ladies, along with the church which influenced nearly all the population. Of course since the theories of evolution in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the population of people in religion and churches has dwindled. If I was to say where power resides today it would be in two places, Government and Celebrities.
Celebrities aren’t the ones who order countries to war or shoot missiles and machine guns at enemies however they are the most followed people on social media. The highest followed person today is Katy Perry who overtook Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber before her. Look at Oprah Winfrey and Snoop Dogg who have built empires such as the O Network. In the search for their fame and riches in the world of Hollywood they gathered a following of fans and then paparazzi, who are desperate for pictures and autographs that they find it difficult to go food shopping and take their kids to school without being harassed and bombarded. Not saying that I feel sympathy for them because they chose that lifestyle for themselves although it’s that following that has given them power.
If Taylor Swift hadn’t signed on an endorsement with Keds, would she still be wearing the brand? If she hadn’t will the hordes of teenage girls still beg their parents for a pair or would they be gushing over the converse pairs if Swift had been advertising them instead.
Kanye West claimed in an radio interview that he and fiancée Kim Kardashian were more popular and influential then Obama and wife Michelle. He had a point that stands out in the younger generations. If you were to ask a youth if they would rather look like Michelle Obama or Kim K the majority would say the latter. I’m not sure why since I only think she’s famous for a sex tape and reality show rather than anything important like lowering overweight statistics in America. I know that I would have chosen the first.
It’s not all about advertising, but if we are susceptible to following them around like lost puppies at what point would we even commit murder or suicide for them. There’s usually a stalker attached to celebrities such as Alec Baldwin’s case where his accused stalker came to his house. He hasn’t been the only celebrity and won’t be the last one to receive threats by a fan. I’m not calling Jennifer Lawrence or George Clooney Charles Manson but take a look to see how he manipulated and influenced people to his dirty work.
You, as the reader, I am sure are intelligent enough to say, ‘Ok, well I’m not doing that’ if a celebrity asked for something outrageous. There remain a percentage of people who are influenced to Idolatry over the famous.
